Office: One Room Challenge Week 7

144 HOLES LATER, we finally have ourselves a storage pegboard for the office/gym makeover! And we are quite surprised at it’s storage versatility.

If you came here from the ORC site, hello! I’m Sanju Patel. By day, I work behind a desk, typically crunching numbers. By night, you can find me in a garage. My wife and I purchased a home in Texas 3 years ago – a quick close without costly bells and whistles. As lifelong fans of DIY, we’ve decided to invest into our home as our family grows with an open invitation to see our process from start to finish.

Really, the pegboard is not difficult to make – just time consuming. Each plywood sheet had 48 holes, equally spaced apart. Having a 1″ Forstner drill bit maximizes performance for a clean cut for 1″ pine rods. But, if you’re like me and choose an economical plywood, tear-out is all too common (which happened by the way).

One trick: drill 3/4 of the way through from the top and the rest of the way from the back. Thankfully nobody will ever look at the back (well, except me.) And if you drill one board – it can be used as a template for the rest.

With such a large unit, French cleats are the best, versatile option to throw up on the wall. Thanks to durable PowerPro Hardware 1″ multi-material screws, our job was simplified and we’re confident the cleats will hold! French cleats were created using 3″ plywood cut down the middle at a 45-degree angle, held with glue and screws. The other end of the French cleat can be secured to the wall using 3/4″ lags (for our purposes, we used 2 lags each rated for 200lbs).

Each pine rod was cut to 5 1/2″ taking into account the 1″ distance between the wall and French cleats. Shelfs were cut to a length of 4.5″ and in lengths of 10″, 15″, 20″, 30.”
