One-Board Designer Side Table

A simple DIY side table inspired by an $800 designer version. This build uses one SYP board, basic angled cuts, glue, screws, and dowel plugs for a clean finished look.

Materials

– 1 2x8x12 SYP board
– Wood glue
– 2 3/4″ or 3″ woodscrews
– 3/8″ wood dowels for plugging screw holes (optional)
Sandpaper
– Antique oak or walnut stain
– Matte clear coat or finishing oil

Tools

– Circular saw
Drill
– Tape measure
– Speed square
– Clamps
– Sander
– Flush-cut saw (optional)

Steps

  1. Cut three pieces from the 2×8 board at 20 inches each. One piece will be the top and the other two pieces will become the legs.
  2. Cut the top and bottom edges of both leg pieces at 10 degrees. Keep the cuts parallel so each leg sits flat on the floor and supports the top evenly.
  3. Dry fit the two legs under the tabletop and adjust the spacing until the proportions look right (about 2 inches from each side). Secure with glue and add screws from the top.
  4. Hold a scrap section of board between the legs and trace the shape for the stretcher. The stretcher should sit between the legs and follow the slight angled shape of the table.
  5. Cut the stretcher to fit, then dry fit it between the legs before assembly.
  6. Apply wood glue where the stretcher meets the legs, then predrill and screw through the outside of each leg into the stretcher.
  7. Add dowels into the holes to hide the screw heads.
  8. Trim the dowels flush, sand the entire table smooth, and slightly ease the sharp edges.
  9. Apply an antique oak or walnut finish and seal with a matte clear coat or oil for a softer designer-style look.

Notes

  • The 10-degree cuts are only on the top and bottom of the leg panels.
  • Predrilling helps prevent splitting.
  • Countersink the screw just a bit for the dowels to plug-in.
  • Keep the dowels evenly spaced so they look intentional.
  • The stretcher is easiest to trace after the top and legs are secured.
  • A matte finish will look closer to an oiled look.
  • This is an inspired DIY version, not an exact replica of the original designer table.
