$25 Super Simple Outdoor Bench
Build a classic Leopold-style outdoor bench using just three boards and basic tools. This simple angled bench is inexpensive, sturdy, and perfect for patios, fire pits, or backyard seating.
Materials
– 1 × 2×6 board
– 1 × 2×8 board
– 1 × 2×10 board
– 2 ½” exterior screws or 3-4” bolts
– Exterior wood finish or sealer (optional)
Tools
– Miter saw or circular saw
– Drill/driver
– Speed square
– Tape measure
– Clamps (optional)
Steps
- Using a 2×8 board, cut 2 long legs (33″) and 2 short legs (18″) with matching 35° angle cuts on both ends.
- Trim a small 1” × 6” triangle section from the end of each long leg to reduce the recline angle slightly.
- Lay out one long leg and one short leg together, flat on the bottom, and using a scrap board underneath to stabilize it.
- Fasten the leg intersection using 2 ½” screws or 3–4” bolts.
- Repeat to create a second leg assembly.
- Cut and install a 45” seat board (2×10) between the short legs.
- Cut and attach a 48” backrest board (2×6) to the long legs.
- Sand edges and apply an outdoor finish if desired.
Notes
- Keeping the bottoms flat during assembly helps prevent wobble.
- Bolts provide a more traditional heavy-duty look, while screws are faster and easier.
- Cedar or pressure-treated lumber works best for outdoor durability.
- Design inspired by the classic Leopold Bench originally published by the Iowa State University Extension.
